D.J. Hoek is Deputy University Librarian in Northwestern University Libraries and Lecturer in Musicology in the Bienen School of Music. As a librarian, his work centers on the administration of collections and research services; as a scholar, he specializes in the history and documentation of twentieth-century music. His two books, Steve Reich: A-Bio-Bibliography (2002) and Analyses of Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century Music, 1940-2000 (2007), are standard reference sources held by libraries worldwide. His articles, essays, and reviews span a range of topics, including copyright and licensing, independent record labels, music cataloging, jazz, John Cage, and the Beatles. His writings have been published in Notes: Quarterly Journal of the Music Library Association, Popular Music & Society, ARSC Journal (Association for Recorded Sound Collections), American Libraries, College & Research Libraries, Cataloging & Classification Quarterly, and other scholarly and professional outlets.
Previously at Northwestern he served as Head of the Music Library, Associate University Librarian for Collections Strategies, and Associate University Librarian for Research & Engagement. Prior to Northwestern, he held librarian and faculty positions at Wichita State University and Kent State University. He also has been a Fellow in Northwestern’s Alice Kaplan Institute for the Humanities.
