Music Academy Piano

At the Northwestern Music Academy, we offer piano lessons to every age and level of learning. Children who take private lessons also participate in group classes, which strengthen the community experience of music study. Because we believe that a well-rounded musical education is of the utmost importance, students participate in the Achievement in Music program, through which they supplement their repertoire study with theory, sight reading, harmonization, aural skills, and technique. Students have several performance opportunities throughout the year.

We also welcome adult learners, through both private and group classes. Adult Class Piano offers students the chance to begin a new instrument—or continue where they left off—in a supportive learning environment. 

Our teachers are some of the most experienced and highly trained instructors in the Chicago area.  We value excellence in musical education while tailoring learning to every individual.

Junior Piano

Piano lessons for young beginners are taught in an enjoyable small class setting. Children learn to play beginning piano pieces through pre-reading followed by staff notation. Children's natural curiosity about music is stimulated through various games and activities that include singing and listening. Alphabet skills and familiarity with numbers are strengthened through music reading and symbol recognition. After completing this course, students will be ready to progress to more formal piano instruction in the Music Academy.

Research studies prove that parental involvement in a young child's musical development is important. A parent must be present at the lesson so that they may assist with practice of weekly assignments.

Classes meet once a week during the entire academic year (Fall, Winter and Spring quarters). Students must enroll for all three quarters. Applications are accepted in the summer only. Piano Coordinator Annie Hsiao will contact all applicants for a readiness interview to determine placement.

A $100 deposit is required to secure your spot in class.

Private Piano - Youth

The piano curriculum of the Music Academy is founded upon Northwestern University's reputation for pedagogical excellence. Students work individually with an Academy piano instructor in weekly lessons that are catered to their age and level. Twice a quarter, private lessons are supplemented with group lessons in which students can share in the learning process. Students have multiple opportunities to perform at quarterly recitals at McClintock Hall, in the stunning Ryan Center for the Musical Arts.

In order to create a well-rounded musical education, Academy students participate in Achievement in Music (AIM) exams, a yearly state piano assessment program. AIM is a comprehensive and leveled curriculum written by the Illinois State Music Teachers' Association. Students are adjudicated at one level per year, and receive a score and feedback from a judge. The Theory Exam includes evaluation of sight-reading, harmonization, transposition, aural skills and a written exam. The Performance Exam evaluates technical skills and the performance of repertoire pieces representing the major historical music eras. Participants receive achievement awards (pin, certificate and composer bust) each year that they pass, and upper level students (levels 9-12) can also earn a personalized plaque.

Adult Piano

Small group piano lessons (4 to 6 people) are offered for adults at several levels, including beginning, intermediate and early advanced. Classes include a variety of learning experiences including repertoire, sight-reading, theory, harmonization and improvisation. Private or Partner Lesson options, offering more individualized instruction, may be available for late-intermediate and early advanced level students. Students must have access to a piano or touch-sensitive keyboard for practice of weekly assignments.

Piano Policies Top

Registration

A one-time, yearly registration applies to the full Academic school year (Fall-Winter-Spring quarters). Students are expected to make a year-long commitment to their piano lessons during the school year. Exceptions may be applied due to relocation and other personal reasons.

Practice

To foster weekly growth and improvement, Academy students must commit to regular daily practice between lessons. Parents play an important role in guiding and managing their child's practice routine. Teachers will provide specific practice expectations for each age and level.

Recital Guidelines

Children are expected to perform in at least one piano recital during the school year upon recommendation of their teacher.

  • Each student performs one piece by memory.

  • Recital location: McClintock Hall, inside Ryan Center for the Musical Arts (address: 70 Arts Circle Drive). Enter the main glass doors and follow the hall to the left. Parking is free on weekends in the adjacent parking lot.

  • Students are asked to dress in recital attire. Please do not wear jeans, sneakers or sports attire.

  • Students may arrive at the hall 15-20 minutes early to warm-up briefly on the piano.

  • Families are asked to attend the full recital in order not to disrupt performances.

  • No cell phones or flash photography may be used during performances. There are plenty of photo opportunities before and after the recital.

  • All are welcome to join the reception following each recital.

Missed Lessons

  • Canceled lessons due to illness or family emergency are considered excused absences. Teachers may offer one makeup lesson per quarter.

  • Vacations, sports activities, or other miscellaneous events are considered unexcused absences, and will not be made up.

  • Makeups for excused absence will be offered at the discretion of the teacher. Often, group weeks are the best time to make up excused absences.

  • There are no makeups for missed group lessons, although your child may be invited to visit another group lesson if an appropriate level is available.

  • Teachers who miss lessons are responsible for making up the time. In the event a teacher is unable to teach due to illness, family emergency or inclement weather, every effort will be made to notify parents ahead of time.

Late Arrivals

  • Please arrive on time to your lesson. Students who are late cannot be guaranteed their full lesson time.

  • Teachers reserve the right to end a lesson early if a student arrives ill, unprepared or without their books.

Illness

Out of respect, please notify your teacher if your child is sick. The teacher will use their discretion to decide on whether to have the lesson in person, on Zoom, or rescheduled to a later day/time. Masks are available in the lobby of the Music Academy.

Weather Related Cancellations

  • In the event Northwestern closes for inclement weather, Academy lessons will also be rescheduled for another time.

  • In the event of a weather emergency during the lessons, teachers will abide by Northwestern safety protocols.

Dismissal

The Academy reserves the right to dismiss any student due to delinquent payment of tuition, frequent absences, failure to practice, and/or continued behavioral problems.

Susan Ramey Osborn

Susan Ramey Osborn received a Doctor of Music degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from Northwestern University, a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Smith College, and a Professional Teaching Certificate from The New School for Music Study in Princeton, NJ. She also studied at the American Conservatory at Fontainebleau, France, and L'Ecole Normale de Musique, Paris under a Harriet Hale Woolley Scholarship. Her performance teachers included Robert Miller, Serge Petitgirard, Michael Zenge, Phyllis Rappeport, Francis Whang, Jacob Lateiner, and David Kaiserman. Dr. Osborn studied pedagogy under Frances Clark, Louise Goss, Sam Holland, Frances Larimer, Elvina Truman Pearce, and Marcia Bosits. In addition to teaching at the Academy, Dr. Osborn is on Keyboard Skills faculty of Northwestern University and the Piano faculty of Interlochen Arts Camp. Her teaching experience includes both private and group instruction for students of all ages and levels. As a performer, she has presented numerous recitals and has appeared as a soloist with orchestras. Annie Hsiao

Piano Coordinator

Annie Hsiao holds a Doctor of Music degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from Northwestern University. Her research included rhythmic analysis in Russian piano etudes, flexibility of tempo rubato, and Lisztian piano technique. She received bachelor and master degrees in piano performance from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she also earned a masters degree in music theory. Hsiao received numerous academic and piano performance awards during her college and graduate years, including the University Library Award, Teaching Excellence Award, and Piano Division Achievement Award. Under the guidance of Kenneth Drake, David Kaiserman, and Alan Chow, she has performed in several recitals and has participated in numerous piano competitions. Her major pedagogy teachers include Frances Larimer, Marcia Bosits, and Mary Beth Molenaar. Hsiao currently teaches private and group lessons in the Music Academy and keyboard skills classes in the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University.

Marcia Bosits

Marcia Bosits is the former director of piano pedagogy at the Bienen School of Music. She received her Doctor of Music degree from Northwestern, where she studied piano with Wanda Paul and Arthur Tollefson. The recipient of a Kosciuszko Foundation Fellowship, she also earned an Artist Diploma from the Warsaw Conservatory in Poland. Dr. Bosits has held national positions in organizations including Music Teachers National Association, the College Music Society, the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy, the World Piano Conference, and the International Fulbright Committee. Her articles have appeared in such journals as ClavierKeyboard CompanionAmerican Music Teacher, and Piano Journal. Active as an adjudicator, clinician, and chamber musician, she has appeared as guest performer for the European Piano Teachers Association (EPTA) Conferences in Rome, Portugal, and Serbia. Her work promoting the educational connections among teaching, mentoring, and engagement has been featured at the CMS International Conference in Stockholm, the National Mentoring Institute, and the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy.

Grace Juang

Grace Juang received her Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Piano Performance from the University of Maryland. Her research examined music by Robert and Clara Schumann. She holds a master of music degree in piano performance from Northwestern University and a bachelor of arts degree in music from National Taiwan Normal University. Under the guidance of Alan Chow and Larissa Dedova, Grace has performed in several solo and chamber recitals throughout Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Taiwan. She won the 22nd International Young Artists Piano Competition in Washington, D.C. Her mentors include Marcia Bosits and Elvina Pearce. She has taught at Taipei First Girls' High School and worked with piano students of all ages and levels. In addition to teaching at Northwestern University's Music Academy, Dr. Juang is on the piano faculty of the Music Institute of Chicago. As an active member of the Music Teachers National Association, she serves as chair for the Illinois Music Teachers Association Northeast Audition and co-chair for the North Shore Music Teachers' Association Piano Competition. She is a dedicated and passionate teacher whose ultimate goal is for students to develop a lifelong appreciation for music, and many of her students have won competition prizes.

Karen Kan-Walsh

Karen Kan-Walsh is the Coordinator of Keyboard Skills and Non-Major Piano in the Bienen School as well as an instructor at Bienen’s Music Academy. Kan-Walsh graduated with high distinction in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan School of Music. Two years later she received the Master of Music in Piano Performance from the U of M as well and she completed the doctorate in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at the Bienen School. As a pre-college student, Kan-Walsh studied piano with her mother, Juliana Kan, for ten years, followed by Charles Fisher, Eugene Bossart, Eugene Lettvin, Joseph Gurt, and Laurence Davis. Pedagogy studies were with Frances Larimer and Marcia Bosits. Kan-Walsh has a particular interest in piano technique, and the music of J.S. Bach, Mozart, Chopin and Brahms. Kan-Walsh wrote reviews for newly published music for many years for “Clavier” journal. Performances span the Chicago and Ann Arbor areas, St. Petersburg, Russia, and Chengdu, China. Recent performances focus on two-piano literature with her colleague, Annie Hsiao. She is an active member of the Illinois State Music Teachers Association, presenting on Keyboard Skills and group piano topics. Her most recent presentation was titled “Deeper Musical Experiences in Keyboard Skills.”  A member of Pi Kappa Lamda, Kan-Walsh was also recognized by Northwestern University’s Associated Student Government for excellence in teaching.

Yeeseon Kwon

Dr. Yeeseon Kwon provides adult group and private piano instruction in the Music Academy. She is pianist and associate professor of piano musicianship and piano pedagogy at Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. Dr. Kwon has presented masterclasses and interactive lectures on developing the technical and musical artistry of Romantic pianism, Strengths-based teaching approaches in piano pedagogy, innovative uses of technology in group piano pedagogy, andragogy, and best practices in adult learning pedagogy. Dr. Kwon is a Course Contributor for A Pianist’s Guide to Teaching in Groups, a self-guided online course from The Frances Clark Center Teacher Education Courses. She is also the Column Editor for Books, Materials, and Music for the Piano Magazine. As editor of keyboard music, she collaborated with various composers editing educational piano music publications, and is also active nationally as an adjudicator, workshop clinician, conference and masterclass presenter. Her performances include international solo, duo piano, and collaborative engagements. She serves on the Teaching Adults Steering Committee of the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy. Yeeseon Kwon received the Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Oklahoma in piano performance and pedagogy, as well as the Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees from Northwestern University.

Heidi Mayer

Heidi Mayer, NCTM, holds Bachelor Degrees from the University of Michigan in Piano Performance and Choral Music Education, and a MMA in Piano Performance from Eastern Michigan.  She earned a Diploma in Vocal Accompanying from the Vienna Academy of Music as a Fulbright Scholar. She was a faculty member of De Paul University’s Community Music Program from 1990-1993 and continues to maintain an independent piano studio in Park Ridge.  Mrs. Mayer has taught private and group lessons for children in the Music Academy since 2015.  Ms. Mayer was named Teacher of the Year by the Illinois Music Teachers Association in 2015 and has received teacher enrichment grants from Music Teachers National Association and National Piano Technicians Guild.

Barbara Kreader

Barbara Kreader Skalinder rejoins the Academy’s piano faculty after leaving in 1985 to serve as editor of Clavier Magazine. Kreader has published articles on teaching for Clavier, The Piano Quarterly, and Keyboard Companion, and her column “Variations” appears in Clavier Companion magazine. She is the author of the book, “The Music of Teaching: Learning to Trust Students’ Natural Development.” Kreader worked as a program director for Junior Student Seminars at the summer music camp Rocky Ridge in Estes Park, CO for seven years. Currently, Kreader works for Hal Leonard Corporation in Milwaukee, WI as a consultant for educational keyboard publications and is co-author of the Hal Leonard Student Piano Library method. She presents workshops on piano teaching and methods for Hal Leonard in cities all over the world. She earned a M.M. in piano performance from Northwestern studying with Laurence Davis and piano pedagogy with Frances Larimer. She has taught piano continuously for over forty years. In addition to teaching, Kreader Skalinder earned a Writer’s Certificate in Poetry from the U. of Chicago and is a member of Plumb Line Poets.

Currently, Kreader works for Hal Leonard Corporation in Milwaukee, WI as a consultant for educational keyboard publications and is co-author of the Hal Leonard Student Piano Library method. She presents workshops on piano teaching and methods for Hal Leonard in cities all over the world. She earned a M.M. in piano performance from Northwestern studying with Laurence Davis and piano pedagogy with Frances Larimer. She has taught piano continuously for over forty years. In addition to teaching, Kreader Skalinder earned a Writer’s Certificate in Poetry from the U. of Chicago and is a member of Plumb Line Poets.

Debbie Masloski

Debbie Masloski began her formal training at the Mozart Conservatory in Augsburg, Germany. As a recipient of the Presidential and Goodbord Scholarships she received a bachelors degree from the University of Northern Colorado. She received her masters degree from the Juilliard School where she studied with Nadia Reisenberg, Herbert Stessin and David Diamond. Masloski completed a Doctor of Music degree at Northwestern University, where her research examined the influence of social and religious trends on the piano literature. Her teachers/advisors included David Kaiserman, Francis Larimer, Marcia Bosits, Peter Webster, and John Buccheri. Masloski has won competitions both here and abroad and has appeared as soloist with orchestras including the Chicago Civic Orchestra, New Mexico Symphony, Colorado Springs Orchestra, and the UNC Symphony. She has performed on WFMT radio, is an active soloist, chamber musician, accompanist, and member of the Testore Trio. Masloski has been on the faculty of the University of Illinois, Chicago State University, Lake Forest College, The Merit Music Program in Chicago, The Jemez Music School in New Mexico and artist in residence at California State University. She is a member of the Music Teachers National Association, the Illinois State Music Teachers Association, Pi Kappa Lambda, and is active as an adjudicator. She also directs the orchestra program for school district 73.

Jennifer Merry serves as Kindermusik coordinator in the Northwestern University Music Academy, where she also teaches private and group piano lessons, and Junior Piano classes. In addition, she maintains a busy piano and vocal studio at her home in Glenview, IL. Ms. Jennifer holds master’s degrees from Northwestern University in piano performance and pedagogy, and in music education. She was the owner of Music Together of Glenview for many years, has taught general and vocal music in public and private schools and has led both youth and adult choirs. Ms. Jennifer is a published writer and has written reviews and articles for Keyboard Companion, American Music Teacher, and Clavier magazines. She also sang alto in the Apollo Chorus of Chicago for over 10 years. Ms. Jennifer loves to sing, ride her bike, and hang out with her cats Romeo and Rusty!

Mary Beth Molenaar

Mary Beth Molenaar graduated with a Doctor of Music degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from Northwestern University. She holds master's and bachelor's degrees in piano performance from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, respectively. In addition to piano, her training includes instruction in organ and harpsichord. Her teaching experience includes working with students of all ages and levels in both individual and group piano instruction, as well as teaching collegiate piano pedagogy and keyboard skills classes. She previously served as director of the Music Academy and chair of its Piano Division. She served for over ten years as Chair of the Illinois State MTA Achievement in Music program, a comprehensive piano curriculum with over 3,000 students participating in three states. Molenaar was named as a Foundation Fellow by the Music Teacher's National Association, and has received numerous awards in the past including the Outstanding Service to Music Education in Minnesota Award and the Outstanding Young Alumni Award from St. Cloud State University. Molenaar is a member of Phi Kappa Lambda, Sigma Alpha Iota, and several area music teachers groups.

Jia-Yee Tang received her Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from Northwestern University and her Bachelor of Arts in Music with an emphasis in Piano Performance from the University of California, San Diego. Her previous teachers include Virginia Weckstrom, Marcia Bosits, Elizabeth Buccheri and Stefani Walens. She is the recipient of the Dr. Milton H Saier, Sr. Memorial Award from UCSD and the MTNA Student Achievement Recognition Award from NU. Past musical activities include attending the Aspen Music Festival and giving a recital featuring the works of contemporary composer George Crumb. She is a member of MTNA and served as a board member from 2008-2009. She has been on faculty at the Academy since 2006 and also teaches at the Highland Park campus of the Music Institute of Chicago. In addition to teaching, she remains an active accompanist in the Chicago area, primarily working in collaboration with musicians from Northwestern University.

Her work as an educator has taken her through Chicago Public Schools to present piano music for Ravinia’s One Score, One Chicago and to Chicago suburban schools as an orchestra conductor and chamber music coach. Her students have earned gold medals and placed in local competitions.

As a performer, Katie has given solo recitals in Chicago and abroad in Finland and France. She has been a soloist in concerto performances with the Northwest Festival Orchestra, Schaumburg Youth Symphony Orchestra, and ensembles at Northwestern. She also collaborates as a chamber musician and has performed with the New World Symphony. She is the recipient the Amelia A. Hoff Scholarship, Emma Peters Hooper Scholarship, and the Farwell Award from the Musicians Club of Women. Katie’s teachers include Sylvia Wang and Nina Svetlanova.

His recent research includes the evolution of piano technique, Liszt's Transcendental Études, Beethoven's Notations in Manuscripts, and pedagogical approaches to sight-reading. He also completed his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in piano performance from Yale School of Music and Manhattan School of Music, respectively. Dr. Wong has performed in concert venues across Asia and North America. As an avid chamber musician, he has appeared at the Ravinia Festival, Sarasota Music Festival, Norfolk Music Festival, and Manchester Music Festival. He was the winner of the Thaviu-Isaak Piano Competition, Dover Chamber Music Competition, and Lillian Fuchs Chamber Music Competition. His teachers include James Giles, Peter Frankl, Hung-Kuan Chen, Christopher Elton, and Marc Silverman.

Dr. Wong currently teaches private and group lessons at Northwestern Music Academy and is the Coordinator of Piano Pedagogy at Northwestern University Bienen School of Music. He also serves as the Director of Piano Studies at the University of Chicago. His teaching experience includes working with students of all ages and levels. He is an active member and presenter at the Music Teachers National Association and the Illinois State Music Teachers Association.
