Bienen School visiting artist Claire Chase has been awarded the $100,000 Avery Fisher Prize. She is the first flutist to receive the prize.
The Fisher Prize is awarded to solo instrumentalists who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and excellence in music, with consideration also being given to chamber ensembles. In addition to the $100,000 award, a marble plaque in David Geffen Hall (formerly Avery Fisher Hall) at Lincoln Center commemorates all who have received the prize.
Since fall 2013, Chase has been a visiting artist at the Bienen School, where she leads coaching sessions with Bienen students and performs regularly. Chase has earned acclaim from the New York Times for her “extravagant technique, broad stylistic range, and penetrating musicality.” She was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2012 and, in 2015, was honored with the American Composers Forum Champion of New Music Award.

The Dover Quartet, the Bienen School’s Quartet-in-Residence, received an Avery Fisher Career Grant in March. The $25,000 award provides professional assistance and recognition to talented instrumentalists who have great potential for major careers.
