The Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences’ Litowitz MFA+MA Program and the Bienen School of Music present author Sandra Cisneros in conversation with composer Derek Bermel. The event will include a reading of poetry by Cisneros, a discussion between Cisneros and Bermel, and a performance of select arias from The House on Mango Street, the new opera the two are writing together. Cisneros is the author of the acclaimed novel The House on Mango Street, winner of the Before Columbus Foundation’s American Book Award. Her most recent works are the Spanish and English story Martita, I Remember You/Martita te recuerdo and a poetry collection, Mujer sin vergüenza. Composer and clarinetist Derek Bermel has received the Alpert Award in the Arts, the Rome Prize, Guggenheim and Fulbright fellowships, and the Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His recordings Intonations, Migrations, and Voices have been nominated for Grammy Awards.

Pick-Staiger is a 972-seat hall located in the Arts Circle on the Evanston campus of Northwestern University. The main lobby entrance for concerts is on the west side of the building (revolving and regular doors). Since its inception in 1975, the hall has functioned as both a classroom and performance facility for Bienen School of Music performing ensembles, faculty recitals, festivals, and professional guest artists.
