Northwestern University Jazz Orchestra
A Tribute to Chicago Jazz
Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at 7:30pm CDT
Galvin Recital Hall
Derrick Gardner, conductor
The Chicago style of jazz has its origins in the Mississippi Delta and New Orleans “Dixieland” style pioneered by such musicians as King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, and Louis Armstrong. When it reached the North it evolved, shifting from group improvisation to more formalized structures, with instrumentation changing to adapt to the indoor performances necessary in Chicago’s colder climate. The city’s vibrant jazz scene has launched the careers of a host of artists, including Eddie Harris, Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Bix Beiderbecke, Ramsey Lewis, Nat King Cole, Dinah Washington, and Lil Hardin Armstrong. The Jazz Orchestra celebrates the many facets of Chicago’s still-thriving jazz scene.
