Darius Hampton, conductor

Widely regarded as one of history’s greatest jazz artists, bassist, pianist, composer, and bandleader Charles Mingus was a pioneer in the post-bop genre. Over the course of his three-decade career, he collaborated with the likes of Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Max Roach, and Eric Dolphy. His recordings, including Mingus Ah Um and The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, remain influential to this day, and in 1997 he was posthumously awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
