Steve Reich’s first Bienen School residency as winner of the 2016 Michael Ludwig Nemmers Prize in Music Composition culminated February 9 in a sold-out concert in Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, featuring performances by the Contemporary Music Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble.

Conducted by the Bienen School’s Alan Pierson, the program included three of Reich’s most iconic works: Clapping Music, City Life and Music for 18 Musicians. Reich and Pierson offered brief remarks on stage following intermission.

As part of his residency week, Reich attended music rehearsals and discussions with students and faculty, and he joined Alan Pierson and associate professor Hans Thomalla in conversation February 7 in the David and Carol McClintock Choral and Recital Room to discuss his inspiration, composition style, and the evolution of some of his most famous works.

Reich will return to Northwestern in November 2017 for his second Nemmers Prize residency.
