Pick-Staiger Concert Hall

Robert Taylor, conductor; Imran Amarshi and Sheldon Frazier, doctoral assistant conductors; Ashrey Shah, clarinet (Northwestern Concerto Competition winner)

Omar Thomas’s exuberant Come Sunday rounds out a program inspired by spiritual music. Featuring Bienen Concerto Competition winner Ashrey Shah in a performance of Scott McAllister’s Black Dog: Rhapsody for Clarinet (with playful references to Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven”), as well as a new transcription of Margaret Bonds’s Spiritual Suite, the concert journeys from hymns, spiritual songs, and gospel music to life in the hereafter.

Stephen Montague, Intrada 1631 (after Juan Pérez Bocanegra)

Margaret Bonds (trans. Tyler Ehrlich), Spiritual Suite
