As Northwestern University Bands celebrate their centennial anniversary, the Symphonic Band takes a look back through music history. The program begins with Paul Dooley’s Fantasy of Colors, “inspired by Baroque artwork and the genre of musical fantasias of Johann Sebastian Bach,” according to the composer. The Bach focus continues with Samuel Barber’s Mutations from Bach and an arrangement of Bach’s Toccata, Adagio, and Fugue in C Major by former Northwestern University Director of Bands John Paynter. The program’s second half includes Peter Mennin’s monumental Canzona and a suite from Leonard Bernstein’s MASS.
