Ursula Oppens, Jerome Lowenthal, and Bienen students, piano
Over 30 students from the Bienen piano studio, together with special guest pianists Ursula Oppens and Jerome Lowenthal, perform Frederic Rzewski’s monumental work The People United Will Never Be Defeated!, written for and premiered by Oppens. A five-time Grammy nominee and former John Evans Distinguished Professor of Music at the Bienen School, Ursula Oppens is widely admired for her original, perceptive readings of both new music and standard piano repertoire. She has premiered and/or commissioned works by such composers as John Adams, Luciano Berio, Elliott Carter, John Corigliano, and György Ligeti. Performing in recital with her is Juilliard piano professor Jerome Lowenthal, the winner of international competitions in Brussels, Bolzano, and Darmstadt. Lowenthal has appeared with major orchestras throughout the US and premiered solo works by Rochberg, Capanna, Reis, and Rorem. He also gave the New York premiere of Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the New York Philharmonic.
Tickets are $10 for the general public and $5 for students with valid ID.
