“Elegant and discerning playing” –Gramophone

A graduate of the University of California, San Diego, Robert Barto specializes in historical lute performance. Barto’s recordings for Naxos of lute sonatas by the Baroque composer Silvius Weiss met with critical acclaim and have established him as one of today’s leading lutenists. In 1984 he was awarded first prize in the International Lute Competition in Toronto, as well as the top instrumental soloist prize in the Musica Antiqua Competition in Bruges, Belgium. Barto has performed throughout Europe and North America, including solo recitals at the Festival of Flanders, the Utrecht Festival, Music Before 1800 in New York City, and London’s Purcell Room. An in-demand teacher, he is often on the faculty of the Lute Society of America summer school and has given courses in Sweden, Italy, and Spain. Recent tours have included concerts and a master class in Tokyo. Barto’s program highlights the music of late Baroque lutenists Sylvius Leopold Weiss and Bernhard Joachim Hagen.
