Pick-Staiger Concert Hall
Benjamin Manis, conductor; Christian Santos, percussion (Northwestern Concerto Competition winner)
The Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra opens their first concert of the winter quarter with the exuberant energy of Glinka's overture to the opera Ruslan and Ludmilla. Joseph Schwantner's spirited Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra features Northwestern Concerto Competition winner Christian Santos, performing on an array of percussion instruments. The evening closes with Sibelius's sweeping fifth symphony, evocative of Nordic landscapes. The symphony underwent two revisions over four years, a process Sibelius reflected in his diary: "As if God...had thrown down pieces of a mosaic from the floor of heaven and asked me to work out the pattern."
