Galvin Recital Hall
Derrick Gardner, conductor; Tom Garling and Joe Clark, guest conductors
The Northwestern University Jazz Orchestra’s second fall-quarter performance highlights music by two Bienen School faculty members. Trombonist Tom Garling began his career touring with drummer, songwriter, and bandleader Buddy Rich, later becoming music director and trombonist for Maynard Ferguson’s band. His compositions and playing are featured on recordings by Ferguson, Rich, Tito Puente, Diane Schuur, and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra, among others. Joe Clark’s compositions and arrangements have been performed by artists including Yo-Yo Ma, Renée Fleming, Jon Faddis, Kurt Elling, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Chicago Sinfonietta, and the Spektral Quartet. Clark is the recipient of multiple Luminarts awards, the Kleinman Composition Award, and the Claire and Samuel Edes Foundation Prize for Emerging Artists.
