Mingus, Minga, Mingum—The Music of Charles Mingus

Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at 7:30pm CDT
Galvin Recital Hall
Darius Hampton, conductor; Ethan Philion, bass
Widely regarded as one of history’s greatest jazz artists, bassist, pianist, composer, and bandleader Charles Mingus was a pioneer in the post-bop genre. Over the course of his three-decade career, he collaborated with the likes of Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Max Roach, and Eric Dolphy. His recordings, including Mingus Ah Um and The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, remain influential to this day, and in 1997 he was posthumously awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Joining the ensemble for this performance is guest bassist, composer, and bandleader Ethan Philion, praised by the Washington Post for his “well-honed chops and astounding musicality.” The first-place winner of the 2019 International Society of Bassists Jazz Competition, Philion is the mastermind behind the ensemble and recording project Meditations on Mingus, featured as a headliner at the 2022 Chicago Jazz Festival.
