Darius Hampton, conductor
Tenor saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Sonny Rollins is widely considered one of the most influential musicians in jazz and a pioneer of hard bop. Many of his compositions, including “St. Thomas,” “Oleo,” “Doxy,” and “Airegin” have become jazz standards. Over the course of his seven-decade career, he has performed and recorded with the likes of Bud Powell, Fats Navarro, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, and Thelonious Monk. He has received a National Medal of Arts and the Jazz Foundation of America’s lifetime achievement award, as well as multiple Grammy Awards. Join the Northwestern University Jazz Ensemble as they celebrate Rollins’ music.
