Pick-Staiger Concert Hall
Harvey Felder, conductor
William Grant Still’s vibrant and groundbreaking compositions anchor the Northwestern University Chamber Orchestra’s first concert of the fall quarter. Cumbia y Congo fuses spirited string quartets with hand percussion, while Summerland evokes a dreamy apparition of heaven. His spirited “Can’t cha line ‘em” draws from a blues folk melody depicting African American chain gangs working on railroads. Bookending the concert are Luigi Boccherini’s elegant Symphony No. 19 in E-flat Major and Haydn’s scintillating Symphony No. 101 in D Major.
William Grant Still, Cumbia y Congo from Danzas de Panama
