Nigel North is a self-taught lutenist who has developed a unique career as a teacher, accompanist, soloist, director, and writer. He has performed internationally as a solo recitalist at venues including London’s Wigmore Hall and Vienna’s Konzerthaus, as well as with the award-winning ensemble Romanesca, which he co-founded. An avid teacher, North has held professorships at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Berlin’s Hochschule der Künste, Den Haag’s Royal Conservatory, and Indiana University’s Early Music Institute. His recordings of Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber’s sonatas won Gramophone Classical Music and Edison Awards. North’s extensive list of collaborators includes the Academy of Ancient Music, the Brandenburg Consort, the Purcell Quartet, the Hilliard Ensemble, and many more. In this concert, North performs a program of 16th century lieder, chansons, madrigals, dances, and grounds from composers including Josquin des Prez, Francesco da Milano, and Hans Judenkünig.

Located in the Ryan Center for the Musical Arts, this 400-seat hall features a 40-foot glass wall offering views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline. Undulating walls of Forest Stewardship Council–certified wood, covered with a thin layer of African moabi wood, provide optimal acoustics, and the hall is equipped with state-of-the-art sound and video equipment for recording.
