Praised for her “sizeable voice that captured all of the vacillating emotions” (New York Times), soprano Karen Slack is a sought-after performer, collaborator, curator, and artistic advisor. She is a recipient of the 2022 Sphinx Medal of Excellence and her debut album Beyond the Years: Unpublished Songs of Florence Price, recorded with pianist Michelle Cann, won a 2025 Grammy Award in the Best Classical Solo Vocal Album category. Highlights of Slack’s 2024-25 season include the nationwide tour of her new art song recital project “African Queens” and the world premiere of Damien Geter’s Loving v. Virginia with the Virginia Opera and Richmond Symphony. In this master class, she coaches Bienen School voice and opera students.

Located in the Ryan Center for the Musical Arts, this 400-seat hall features a 40-foot glass wall offering views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline. Undulating walls of Forest Stewardship Council–certified wood, covered with a thin layer of African moabi wood, provide optimal acoustics, and the hall is equipped with state-of-the-art sound and video equipment for recording.
