Program Note
Finding Rothko is inspired by the paintings of the abstract expressionist artist Mark Rothko, which Schoenberg saw at the Museum of Modern Art in New York while just beginning his doctoral studies at Juilliard. Although played without a break, the work is in four distinct movements, each devoted to a specific Rothko painting and named after the principal color used in the painting.
