Richard Boldrey became involved with opera around 1970, when he joined the faculty of North Park College in Chicago, and soon re-established their Opera Workshop program. He then became assistant conductor of Evanston's Opera Midwest, then served as maestro and assistant to Carlo Bergonzi at the Bel Canto Festival in Busseto, Italy. He was an assistant conductor at the Lyric Opera of Chicago from 1981-1987, and again from 1993-1999. In the interim, he codirected the Bold Lion Center for Performing Arts in Boulder, Colorado, was head of the University of Illinois' opera department, was music director of the Colorado Lyric Theatre Festival, and was conductor of Opera Southwest in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He also has taught in the opera department of the University of Iowa. Boldrey is author of Guide to Operatic Roles and Arias and Guide to Operatic Duets and was music editor of the two volumes for sopranos of the Singers' Edition operatic anthology.
