Joel Puckett and Omar Thomas represent prominent, newer voices in wind band composition. The gentle joy of Avelynn’s Lullaby was inspired by composer Puckett’s experiences as a father. Omar Thomas’s decidedly funky The Low-Down Brown Get-Down is, in his words, a soundtrack to an imagined blaxploitation film, “a genre of filmmaking aimed at African-American audiences which puts us in leading roles of stories that often followed anti-establishment plots.” The Symphonic Band’s program also features a beloved classic, a transcription of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition translating Maurice Ravel’s colorful orchestration to the wind band medium.
