Study Abroad

Northwestern offers several study abroad opportunities for School of Music students! Our most recent students studying abroad have just returned from programs in Vienna, London, Santiago (Chile), and Ghana. For more information on Northwestern's study abroad programs, visit the web site for Northwestern University's Study Abroad Office.

The School of Music recommends the following programs for students interested in going abroad primarily to study music:

IES-Paris

Paris, France

  • Qualified students may enroll in the École Normale de Musique de Paris/Alfred Cortot (the private equivalent of the Paris Conservatory).
  • Instrumentalists focus on teaching and performance; vocalists focus on performance.
  • Private instruction with faculty from the Ecole
  • Students enroll in the Ecole's full curriculum and also take a french language course at IES.
  • The program has a language prerequisite of two years or the equivalent of college-level French. All courses are in French.
  • Students interested in this program include an audition tape with their IES application. While most music students are required to audition for the Ecole on site, IES, the Ecole, and Northwestern have a special agreement whereby Northwestern students are informed of their acceptance (or rejection) when they apply. As part of the IES application, music students submit an audition cassette or video to be reviewed by the Ecole. Students should apply early because it will take approximately 4-6 weeks for the Ecole to review the application and respond to IES. Upon their arrival in Paris, accepted students will have a live audition at the Ecole for the sole purpose of determining their placement.
  • Music students are encouraged to work closely with Northwestern's program representative at IES, Shelly Uehara, to arrange an individualized plan that will meet their needs and interests. Shelly can be reached at 800-995-2300 or suehara@iesabroad.org.

IES-Vienna

Vienna, Austria

  • IES music program, with courses in English in music history, music theory, and performance studies
  • Students wishing to enroll in the IES Performance Workshop must audition on-site; accepted students will receive a stipend from IES to help subsidize the cost of private instruction.
  • Students with advanced-level German may enroll at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, which offers a diverse array of music courses, including, but not limited to, pedagogy, performance practice, theory, and history.
  • Private instruction available in English and German with faculty from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and the Vienna Conservatory of Music and members of the Vienna Philharmonic (on-site audition required).
  • Select students may attend master classes and audition for individual instruction at the Conservatory.
  • Students may audition for orchestral, choral, and recital groups at the Conservatory and the University as well as in the broader Vienna community.
  • German language course required
  • Northwestern recommends that students study at IES-Vienna during their Fall Semester.
  • Music students are encouraged to work closely with Northwestern's program representative at IES, Shelly Uehara, to arrange an individualized plan that will meet their needs and interests. Shelly can be reached at 800-995-2300 or suehara@iesabroad.org.

Earning Major/Minor Credit Abroad

Credit for applied study will not usually be accepted in place of the School of Music applied requirements. It will be transferred as free elective credit, unless written approval from the Northwestern applied instructor is obtained.

Participation in ensembles abroad, while encouraged, will not usually satisfy that requirement at Northwestern.

Students may apply to their program chairperson for substitution of a music requirement with a course taken abroad. Written approval should then be endorsed with the signature of the Assistant Dean for Admission and Student Affairs.

Students interested in Honors must contact their departmental advisers before studying abroad.

Students should research the course descriptions of the classes they plan to take abroad so their advisers can consult them and ensure the classes correspond to major/minor requirements at Northwestern.

Students should figure out which courses they will want to take at Northwestern when they return from study abroad. This is necessary because not all courses are offered every quarter.
