MM/DM/Certificate Application
Requirements
The materials below are required to complete the application
for admission to all Master of Music, Certificate in Performance
and Doctor of Music applications to the School of Music. You
are responsible for ensuring that they are received by the
Office of Music Admission and Financial Aid by the appropriate
deadline. The University will not return any items submitted
for admission consideration. Those denoted with an asterisk
(*) are available online.

Master of Music
Applicants
- *Application
for Admission, available online (NOTE
TO APPLICANTS FOR FALL 2009: The online application for 2009-10 is not
currently available; please check back later.)
- *One-page personal statement
- *Nonrefundable $50 application fee
- Official transcripts. Provide official documentation from
each postsecondary school attended, showing all courses taken,
grades, credit received, and degrees awarded or expected.
- *Recommendation forms. Provide two letters from faculty
members or music professionals qualified to comment on your
potential for success in the program.
- Program admission requirements. These include performance
auditions, analytical or research papers, essays, composition
portfolios, or other entry requirements specified by a particular
program (this information is specified in the online application).
- TOEFL scores. If your native language is not English, you
must provide official results of the Test of English as a
Foreign Language (TOEFL).
- Financial aid applications. If you are applying for financial
aid, completed applications for financial aid should be submitted
by May 1.
- Performance Resumé or Curriculum Vitae

Admission Application Information
The PhD application process is administered by the Graduate
School in cooperation with the School of Music.
To apply to the PhD program, first complete
the Graduate School’s
online
application. Then send the materials listed below
directly to the School of Music at:

Materials to be sent to the School of Music are:
- Online application: a printed copy of the online
application. ($75 application fee must be submitted with
the online application)
- Transcripts: two official transcripts from each
post-secondary institution attended. Transcripts must
indicate all courses taken, grades received, and degrees
earned.
- GRE: Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general
test scores are required for all applicants to music Ph.D.
programs. Instruct ETS to send scores to the Graduate
School (reporting code #1565).
- TOEFL: If your native language is not English,
you must certify your proficiency in the English language
in one of the following three ways:
- Providing official scores
for either the TOEFL or IELTS exam. The test must be
taken no more than two years before the intended quarter
of entry. (If you are applying for fall 2008 entry, test
scores must be no older than September 2006.) For the
TOEFL, you must score 600 or higher on the paper-based
test, 250 or higher on the computer-based test, 100 or
higher on the internet based test. For the IELTS, you
must receive a score of 7.0 or higher.
- Providing official
transcripts verifying an undergraduate degree from
an accredited four-year institution or equivalent, where
the language of instruction is English.
- Providing official
transcripts verifying a graduate degree from an accredited
institution where the language of instruction is English
- Essay: a one-page statement describing the area
of concentration you hope to study and the preparation you
have already received in that area (typewritten, 1” margins,
single-space, 12 pt. font).
- Resume: a resume or C.V. detailing your academic
and professional history
- Letters of Recommendation: A minimum
of two are required.
- Supplemental Materials: materials specified by
individual programs
- Music cognition specialization a research
paper of at least 15 pages (typewritten, 1” margins,
double-spaced, 12 pt. font) evidencing your potential to
work on an advanced level.
- Music Education specialization
- 6-7 page essay (typewritten, 1” margins, double-spaced,
12 pt. font) that addresses the following:
- Of the major issues, problems, and trends currently
discussed in the field of music education; 1)
Which do you think are the most important for the future
and how do you envision becoming involved in leadership
activities that address these issues? 2) How will your
studies at Northwestern enhance your goals?
- Examples of previous writing projects
- Two additional letters of recommendation that speak
to your teaching ability
- Video of your teaching is highly desirable
- Musicology specialization a research paper
on a topic related to music history of at least 15 pages
(typewritten, 1” margins, double-spaced, 12 pt. font)
that demonstrates your ability to discuss music in both
historical and analytic contexts and includes appropriate
scholarly references.
