Audition On Campus

2016-2017 Audition Dates

Master of Music

  • February 8-18, 2018
  • February 27, 2018 (All MM Conducting)

After you have submitted your application and any required prescreening materials are reviewed, you will receive a notification if you have been invited for the final round of on-campus auditions. This notification will contain information on how to schedule your audition. Do not book your travel arrangements until you receive official, written confirmation from the Bienen School of Music.

NOTE:  MM Music Education Interviews are scheduled on an ad-hoc basis, and can be in-person or over the phone.

Doctor of Musical Arts

  • February 8-18, 2017
  • February 28, 2018 (DMA Conducting only)

PhD Interviews – To Be Announced

On the day of your audition

  1. Check in with a Bienen School of Music representative; he/she will assist you in locating the warm-up rooms, audition rooms, and other locations on campus.
  2. Your audition invitation email will include a form to list your prepared audition repertoire, and the email will also specify if you need to bring additional forms for the audition panel. However, it is a good idea to bring additional copies of your résumé as well.
  3. Arrive to your audition room at least 15 minutes early.
  4. Have copies of your music with you as a reference, though the audition panel may not ask you for them. Vocalists must bring organized copies of music for the accompanist. You should not send music ahead of time.
  5. Plan to spend the day at Northwestern, in case auditions are running late. On audition days, there are multiple opportunities to meet with students & faculty, and to attend admission sessions for graduate students. You may also qualify for free tickets to selected concerts.
  6. On weekdays you are welcome to observe classes or attend ensemble rehearsals.
  7. Warm-up rooms will be made available on audition days, but are not guaranteed if you arrive on a different day.

Audition By Recording

DMA applicants must audition on campus, if invited after submitting the application and prescreening requirements. Recordings will not be accepted as a final audition for the DMA degree. Composers will be asked to visit campus for interviews with the faculty.

MM applicants who cannot complete an on-campus audition must upload a recording to use as the final audition. Recordings should be uploaded by December 1 as part of the online graduate application process. If you are unable to attend a previously scheduled on-campus audition (i.e., for illness), contact the Office of Music Admission to discuss the submission of a recorded audition.

NOTE:  MM Jazz Studies and Conducting applicants must attend the on-campus audition, if invited, to be considered for admission.
