Northwestern has a long tradition of great chamber music performances by outstanding student, faculty and world renowned guest performers. We feature a wide array of music from traditional string quartets, piano trios and brass quintets to other less traditional instrumentations.
Students at the Bienen School of Music participate in weekly coachings with their assigned master teacher. They also participate in weekly master class settings with guest artists and our own Bienen School faculty. These classes present ‘topics in chamber music’ as well as the more typical instruction between faculty and student ensembles.
The Student Chamber Music Series features select students playing in a variety of chamber ensembles. The series takes place twice monthly on Sunday afternoons throughout the school year. These concerts are recorded and open to the public and alternate between two campus locations in Evanston: Lutkin Hall and Regenstein Hall of Music.
Northwestern hosts renowned chamber groups such as the Guarneri Quartet, Eighth Blackbird and the Imani Winds to perform and give master classes for our students. Additionally, we feature our annual winter chamber music festival.
All Chamber Music students participate in an outreach program in the community and public schools. Also, the Bienen School has a referral service for chamber groups wanting to perform in the Chicago area.
